Telecom Tower (formerly the Post Office Tower)

This is another one of London’s more recent, but equally iconic architectural statements and it is located on Cleveland Street.

Built in the 1960’s, the Telecom tower was seen as a masterpiece of structural engineering that used it height (189 metres) to send telecommunication signals across the country and around the world. Additionally it offered a dinning room (the “top of the tower” restaurant) that rotated constantly presenting its occupants with a 360 degree view of London below.

The structure was built at what today appears to be a ridiculously cheap cost of two million pounds, but in its day it was seen as astronomically expensive. It was opened by the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson and was an immediate hit with tourists.

Although today eclipsed by the likes of the Millennium Eye and the Lloyds building, This 1960’s tower still has its place in London’s history.
