London Weekend Break
Tate Modern
The Tate Modern is one of a collection of "Tate" museums known cumulatively as the "Tates".
The Tate Modern is probably the most prominent of the collective and is a platform for modern and alternative art in all its forms.
One of the features that makes the Tate Modern unique (in gallery and museum terms) is the publicity that some of its more abstract exhibits attract.
Many in the art world see this museum, more than any other, as making art accessible to the masses and although some exhibits, along with their creators, have received criticism, the gallery continues to profile unusual and adventurous works. It really is a gallery at the cutting edge of the artistic world.
The Tate Modern is situated in the Bankside Power Station and admission is free.
The different galleries are spread across the buildings floor levels and are themed in an abstract manner with displays grouped under terms like, "States of flux" and "Material gestures".
Links relating to London and the Tate Modern
Despite its less than conventional take on the art world, the Tate Modern's thought provoking displays and mass accessibility have made it a massive success and even those who are not impressed leave with an opinion about the gallery. Definitely one of London's must see attractions.
The nearest tube station is Southwalk with Blackfriars also in the vicinity.
