Olympic Venues – London and Beyond

The Royal Artillery Barracks

Situated in Woolwich, South East London this famous 18th century building once housed the Royal Artillery. The Barracks boast the longest faηade of any building in the UK as well as the largest parade ground. During the Olympics the three shooting disciplines of Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun will be held at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Shooting – Saturday 28th July to Monday 6th August

Wembley Arena

Wembley Arena was built in 1923 along with the original Wembley Stadium when Wembley hosted the British Empire Exhibition. The original Wembley Arena was then known as the Empire Pool and the pool still remains to this day despite some major refurbishment works over the years. Wembley Arena has a long history as a sports venue hosting such diverse events as Boxing, Snooker and utilising the pool, Ice Hockey.

During the Olympics Wembley Arena will host the Badminton and Rhythmic Gymnastics events.

Badminton – Saturday 28th July to Sunday 5th August
Rhythmic Gymnastics – Thursday 9th August to Sunday 12th August

Wembley Stadium

The new Wembley Stadium is one of six venues hosting the football competition. The original Wembley Stadium was used in the 1948 Olympics and was known as the Empire Stadium and was famous for its iconic twin towers. The original stadium was demolished in 2003 and the current stadium, with its 440 foot high arch opened in 2007.

The new stadium continues the legacy of the old stadium by hosting the major football cup finals such as the FA Cup, Football League cup and the Football League Trophy. It also hosts the Rugby League Challenge Cup and American Football games. In addition to being a major sports stadium, Wembley is used as a concert stadium. With 90,000 seats it is considered to be the second largest stadium in Europe.

During the 2012 Olympic Games Wembley will host some of the men and women's preliminary football matches and will then host the men's quarter finals, semi finals and the final along with the women's semi final and final.

Wimbledon

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in South London, famous around the world as the venue of the Wimbledon Championships one of the four grand slam events of the tennis calendar, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and considered by most tennis players as “the” tournament to win. With a reputation for having matches rained off the All England Club fitted the Centre Court with a retractable roof in 2009.

During the Olympics the Men's and Women's singles and the Doubles and Mixed Doubles will be held at Wimbledon between Saturday 28th July and Sunday 5th August.


Venues outside of London include

City of Coventry Stadium

The home of Coventry City Football Club, the City of Coventry Stadium will host some of the men's and women's preliminary football matches, the women's quarter final and the women's bronze medal match between Wednesday 25th July and Thursday 9th August.

Eton Dorney

Situated near Windsor Castle, Eton Dorney will host the Rowing and a new Olympic event the Canoe Sprint.

Rowing – Saturday 28th July to Saturday 4th August
Canoe Sprint – Monday 6th August to Saturday 11th August

Hadleigh Farm

Hadleigh Farm in Essex will host the Mountain Bike competition over two days from Saturday 11th August to Sunday 12th August.

Lee Valley White Water Centre

The new Lee Valley White Water Centre will host the Canoe Slalom. This centre is part of the 1000 acre River Lee Country Park in Hertfordshire.

Canoe Slalom – Sunday 29th July to Thursday 2nd August.

Millennium Stadium

The Welsh national stadium, the 74,600 seat Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host some of the men's and women's preliminary football matches and the men's and women's quarter final, the men's bronze medal match from Wednesday 25th July to Friday 10th August.

Old Trafford

Famous all over the world as the home of Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford will host some of the men's and women's preliminary football matches, the men's quarter final and the men's and women's semi finals between Thursday 26th July and Tuesday 7th August.

St James' Park

Home to Newcastle United Football club, St James' Park will host also host some of the men's and women's preliminary football matches, a women's quarter final and a men's quarter final between Thursday 26th July and Saturday 4th August.

Weymouth and Portland

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Dorset on the south coast will play host for the sailing disciplines between Sunday 29th July and Saturday 11th August.
