London Weekend Break

The British Museum

The British Museum has free admission and is open seven days a week with late night openings on Thursdays and Fridays. It is widely regarded as one of the world’s best museums.

The British Museum is located on Great Russell Street in the heart of London and has a massive array of displays totalling almost thirteen million in number.

The British Museum aims to document and chart the human age by displaying exhibits connected with human culture and development. The museum’s displays represent all of the continents, peoples and cultures of the world.

In addition to the vast galleries of permanent display there are always numerous “guest” displays and exhibits, many of these premiere the world s greatest archaeological treasures.

The museum was first foundered in 1753 and has subsequently been split into various specialities, some establishing themselves as unique entities like the Natural History museum and the British library. The original British Museum does however remain the most famous the world over.

Different sections (or galleries) within the museum include collections dedicated to prehistoric Europe, Greek and Roman antiquities, Egypt and the Sudan and coins and medals, to name but a few.

The Museum has eateries and shops and caters for all ages with the usual politically correct emphasis on "learning".

Audio tours are also available for adults, children and family groups at an extra cost.

The closest tube stations are Russell Square, Tottenham Court Road and Holborn..
