London Weekend Break
Admiralty Arch
The name Admiralty Arch is said to come from the headquarters of the Royal Navy a short distance away, but the two structures are otherwise unconnected.
Designed by Sir Aston Webb in 1920, Admiralty Arch is one of London’s most famous landmarks with its light grey curved walls and elegant archways. It features on many state processions as the cavalcades of vehicles pass by the adjacent landmark of Trafalgar Square and on towards (or away from) Buckingham Palace on the Royal route to St. Paul’s cathedral.
Admiralty Arch opens on to “The Mall” and its three large arches are made of massive blocks of Portland stone.
Many tourists (wrongly) confuse Admiralty Arch with the more famous, but far less impressive, Marble Arch.
There are several tube stations near Admiralty Arch, but the nearest is Charing Cross.
